Selecting an Arc Spray Power Source for Your Workload

Choose an arc spray power source around the coating job, duty requirements and utilities. Learn why the current rating alone is not a complete comparison.

A power-source current rating is useful, but it is not a complete description of an arc spray installation. The BU-8830 brochure lists several model ratings and drive options. Selection should begin with the workpiece, coating and expected daily workload.

Define the production requirement

Estimate the area to be coated, required thickness, number of components and available production hours. Include setup, masking, blasting, handling and inspection time. The spray rate is only one contributor to daily output, so a larger rating may not remove a bottleneck elsewhere in the workshop.

Confirm the electrical installation

Request the proposed power source's input requirements and installation instructions. A qualified electrician should confirm the supply, protection, cable arrangement and earthing for that model. Do not infer those requirements from the output current printed in a product name.

Compare like-for-like trials

When assessing capacity, use the same coating material and an agreed representative component or coupon. Ask how quoted output was measured and whether it refers to material sprayed or useful coating deposited. Review duty conditions and the operating range approved for the gun and wire combination.

What to include in a request

Component dimensions, surface area and coating specification.
Batch size, working hours and target turnaround.
Available electrical and compressed-air supplies.
Planned drive, gun, service lengths and material changes.

Should a small workshop always buy the smallest unit?

Not necessarily. Compare present work with realistic future jobs, while checking utilities and total installation cost. Choose the configuration that can meet the defined process and production requirements rather than a rating in isolation.
