Planning Arc Spray Restoration of a Worn Shaft

Plan a shaft restoration enquiry for arc spraying. Record wear, base material, coating allowance, finishing and acceptance requirements before equipment selection.

The BU-8830 brochure identifies shaft and roller rebuilding among twin-wire arc applications. A worn shaft still needs an engineering assessment before coating. Surface restoration should not be assumed to repair structural damage or make every component suitable for reuse.

Establish the starting condition

Record the original dimensions, measured wear, base material and the function of each surface. Identify cracks, distortion or other damage for assessment by the responsible engineer. Clarify whether the aim is dimensional recovery, improved surface performance or both.

Allow for the complete repair route

The process may include preliminary machining, surface preparation, coating and final finishing. Agree the coating area, transition details and allowance for finishing before spraying. Final size is not the same as as-sprayed thickness, so both should be specified clearly.

Define acceptance before production

The drawing and repair specification should state the relevant dimensional, surface and coating requirements. Agree how these will be inspected and recorded. If a representative trial or coupon is required, include it in the schedule and quotation rather than adding it after coating.

Dimensioned drawing and photographs of the worn areas.
Base material and known service conditions.
Target final dimensions and surface finish.
Coating specification, inspection requirements and quantity.

Is thermal spraying the same as rebuilding by welding?

No. The process and resulting interface are different. The repair route should be selected and approved for the component's loads, geometry and service requirements.
