Arc Spray Deposition Rate: Read the Quotation Carefully

Understand the difference between sprayed material, deposited coating and completed output when comparing arc spray equipment production-rate claims.

Production figures are useful only when their basis is clear. A quoted wire consumption or spray rate does not automatically equal useful coating deposited on an accepted component. Ask how each figure was obtained before comparing equipment packages.

Separate the main measurements

Material fed into the process, material reaching the target area and completed parts per shift describe different things. Geometry, masking, overspray, handling and finishing affect the relationship between them. A supplier should identify the material and operating conditions associated with a reference figure.

Use your actual component

Flat test pieces and complex components can have different access and utilization. Provide a representative drawing, required coating area and thickness. Include setup and inspection when discussing daily output, so that the quotation addresses workshop throughput rather than one isolated process rate.

Compare the full cost basis

Wire, utilities, consumable wear, preparation, labour and finishing all contribute to cost. A faster spray stage may not reduce total cost if handling or downstream operations dominate the job. Request a trial or documented estimate using agreed assumptions where production volume justifies it.

Questions to ask

Is the figure consumption, spray output or deposited mass?
Which material, diameter and component geometry were used?
What preparation and finishing work is excluded?
How are rejected or reworked components treated in the estimate?

Is the highest quoted rate always the best choice?

No. The useful comparison is accepted output and total cost under the required coating specification, supported by clear assumptions and an achievable installation plan.
